On 12 August 1624, Charles de La Vieuville - the minister who had personally forced Richelieu onto the royal council four months earlier - was arrested for corruption. By the next evening, the cardinal had his job, and would keep it for eighteen years.

On 14 May 1610, Henry IV of France was stabbed to death in his carriage on the Rue de la Ferronnerie by a Catholic zealot named François Ravaillac. He had survived thirty years of religious civil war. He did not survive a traffic jam.
